Such problem occurs when you are affected by a w32.USBworm or its varient. Although now there are updates to clean this worm but still you are not able to unhide hidden folders. In such case one of the following registry edits work for sure.
Solution 1:
Go to Start –> Run, then type regedit and press Enter
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
Find a key called CheckedValue
Double Click “CheckedValue” key and modify it to “1“. This is to show all the hidden files.
Solution 2:
Open Notepad and Paste the following.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden]
“Text”=”@shell32.dll,-30499”
“Type”=”group”
“Bitmap”=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f
,00,74,\
00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,
00,5c,00,53,00,\

“HelpID”=”shell.hlp#51131”
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

“RegPath”=”Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Advanced”

“ValueName”=”Hidden”
“DefaultValue”=dword:00000002

Now save this as unhide.reg . Note that the file should end with .reg extension. Double click on this and click yes.
Solution 3:
Go to Run –>gpedit.msc
User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer
Double click “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu“ , Select Enable and click OK. Now again double click ,select Disable and click OK.
look, if you’re sure you dont have a virus and your usb (like mine) was just being annoying, download iReset (google it and click the first link) and follow the instructions. It fixed my problem in 5 seconds, not even joking!!!!!!!!! Forget command prompt and all that!
Still i am unable to unhide files in my external hard disc i tried all methods attrib & reg still not working. When i go to properties, hidden is ticked and disabled. pls help

It really works, thanks a lot..!!
If gpedit.msc is not running then you may be running windows xp home edition which does not ship with group policy editior.
Use a good anti-spyware like spybot search and destroy with updated definitions and try to clean the system.
but gpedit.msc is not working in my system.
it is showing that it is a wrong comand.
what should i do?
even the checked value after changing it to “1” it automatically changes to “0” when i reopen regedit.
this is really great. it worked for my laptop. superb.
thanks a lot
